Save the Stockwell Community Centre from closure

stockwellcentre[1]Hyde Housing Association is planning to get rid of its Community Centres in Lambeth and the rest of London. It wants to lease Stockwell Community Centre to a private group and flatten the Centre on Kennington Park Estate. There, they want to build luxury flats for sale, with no social housing.

But these Centre are at the heart of our communities. They are where we meet, where we learn and where we go for advice and support. losing them will mean increased isolation and anti-social behaviour.

These Centres were part of the deal by which Lambeth Council transferred Studley and Kennington Park to Hyde Housing. Promises were made to support the Centres long-term, so Hyde is breaking its promises.

70,000 local people use the two Centres each year. Hyde Housing has £95 million in the bank – and begrudges the measly £170,000 it paid out last year to run both Centres.

We want;:
1. to attend a public consultation meeting with Hyde.
2. to contribute to Hyde’s decision making process
3. to read the ‘independent reports’ that Hyde say show that the centre needs to close.
4. to understand how Hyde Plus tried to help the centre before
5. to help Hyde to choose any new owners.

Gather with us for a family-friendly protest on Saturday, January 21st, 2017 at 2pm. Meet at Stockwell Memorial Gardens, opposite Stockwell Tube.
